Walk-In Freezer Evaporator Replacement in Grayslake, IL
Legacy Refrigeration was recently called in to service a 20-year-old Heatcraft system for a walk-in freezer in Grayslake, IL, which was struggling to cool below 20°F. Given the freezer’s age and performance issues, we aimed to diagnose the problem and offer the most effective long-term solution.
Diagnosing the Problem
After performing a preliminary diagnosis, we determined that the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) had failed. Given the system’s age, we also considered other potential issues, such as leaking refrigerant coils, motor failure, and control system malfunctions. We recommended replacing the evaporator with new controls and a TXV to ensure long-term reliability.
Upgrading to a Larkin Walk-In Freezer Evaporator
The client approved our recommendation, and we installed a new Larkin walk-in freezer evaporator. Our process included:
✅ Recovering all refrigerant and safely disposing of the existing coil
✅ Brazing in the new coil and performing a 500 psi pressure decay test to ensure no leaks
✅ Vacuuming the system to 500 microns to remove any moisture or contaminants
✅ Charging with the appropriate amount of refrigerant
Additionally, we installed a new thermostat cold control, solenoid coil and body, TXV, and evaporator coil to ensure the system operates at peak efficiency.
The Results: Reliable, Cold Performance
Once the installation was complete, the system quickly pulled down to -10°F, exceeding the client’s expectations. With this new, energy-efficient setup, they can rely on consistent, optimal cooling for years.
