Cooler Repair Project in Round Lake Beach, IL
Legacy Refrigeration recently serviced a three-door Atosa reach-in cooler located in Round Lake Beach, after receiving a call that the cooler was not cooling below 50°F, well above the optimal temperature for proper food storage.
Upon arrival, we found the cooler at 50°F and immediately inspected the evaporator coil. It was completely encased in ice, a common issue when the system isn’t functioning correctly. To begin the assessment, we interrupted the power to the unit and defrosted the coil.
Once the evaporator coil was defrosted, we restored power to the system. The compressor operated as expected, but the evaporator fan was not running. We manually pressed the fan door switches to troubleshoot, and the evaporator fans activated properly. However, we discovered that the cooler’s doors were not fully engaging the fan switches when closed, which caused the fans to remain off. Over time, cooler and freezer doors can sag, which prevents them from closing tightly and activating the switches.
A malfunctioning evaporator fan can lead to coil freezing, as the compressor runs under full load without the fan circulating air. The fan switch is designed to turn off when the doors are open to protect workers who may be using the equipment.
To resolve the issue, we applied weatherized sealant to the top of the doors to ensure they properly closed the fan switches when shut. After applying the sealant, we tested the system and confirmed that the fans were operating as intended. The system successfully reached 35°F, and the test run was satisfactory.
