Legacy Refrigeration recently completed a Coolers & Freezers repair project in Chicago, IL, for a popular downtown restaurant after a walk-in freezer began leaking water onto the floor.
Walk-In Freezer Drain Leak Repair
Legacy Refrigeration responded to a service call about a walk-in freezer that was leaking water throughout the kitchen. After inspecting the system, our technician determined that the drain tube heater had failed, causing the freezer drain line to freeze solid.
When freezer drain heaters fail, condensation and defrost water cannot properly drain from the evaporator drain system. This often leads to ice buildup, blocked drainage, and eventually water leaking onto the floor around the freezer.
Rebuilding the Frozen Drain Line
To properly resolve the issue, the entire copper drain line had to be dismantled and rebuilt. Our technician carefully removed the frozen drain assembly and installed a brand-new drain line designed to properly penetrate the walk-in freezer.
By rebuilding the drain system, Legacy Refrigeration ensured proper drainage flow and helped prevent future freezing issues that could cause additional leaks or operational disruptions.
Installing a New Drain Tube Heater
After rebuilding the drain line, a new drain tube heater was installed to prevent future ice formation inside the freezer drain system. The drain line was then insulated using 3/4-inch Armaflex insulation to provide proper thermal protection and improve overall drain performance.
Proper insulation is critical in walk-in freezer applications because it helps maintain consistent temperatures and prevents condensation or freezing issues from returning.
Testing the Walk-In Freezer Drain System
Once the repairs were completed, the entire drain system was thoroughly tested to verify proper operation. The drain line flowed correctly, and no leaks were present in the newly rebuilt drain assembly.
With the freezer fully operational again, the restaurant resumed normal operations without ongoing water-leakage concerns.
