Legacy Refrigeration recently assisted a loyal client in Mundelein, IL, who was experiencing issues with their walk-in cooler and was struggling to maintain temperatures below 40°F. When we arrived, the cooler was holding at a concerning 60°F, posing a potential risk to the prepared food stored for the week. Our team worked diligently to resolve the issue and ensure the safety of the client’s inventory.
Diagnosing the Issue
Upon inspection, we found the compressor was discharging extremely high temperatures, peaking at 170°F based on our thermal imaging readings. These elevated temperatures were far beyond normal operational ranges and indicated a potential airflow or mechanical issue within the system.
Further analysis of the condenser coil revealed heavy airflow restriction caused by dirt and grease buildup. This obstruction prevented the system from efficiently dissipating heat, leading to elevated compressor temperatures.
Restoring Functionality
To resolve the issue, we thoroughly cleaned the condenser coil using an expanding foam degreaser, followed by pressure washing the fins to remove all debris. Given the severity of the buildup, the system required two rounds of cleaning to restore proper airflow fully.
After the cleaning, the compressor discharge temperature dropped to 120°F, a safe and normal range for the ambient temperature and refrigerant charge. Upon restarting the system, the walk-in cooler quickly began cooling efficiently, dropping below 40°F and restoring a safe storage environment for the client’s food inventory.
